You may have heard there are different types of air conditioning systems. Figuring out what air conditioner best fits your home can be stressful, as there are so many options. Such systems can range from window AC units, portable AC units, traditional central AC systems and ductless mini-split systems. But what is a ductless AC, and how does it work? Service Wizard AC is here to explain what a ductless mini-split system is and if it’s a good fit for your home.
What is Ductless AC?
A ductless mini-split air conditioner is an AC unit that doesn’t use ductwork. It operates almost identical to a traditional AC system – it includes an indoor and outdoor unit. The units are connected by refrigerated tubing and electrical wiring. The indoor unit is often wall-mounted and delivers heated or cooled air to a room from your outdoor unit without ductwork.
How Does Ductless AC Work?
The heating process of a ductless AC unit is similar to the traditional AC. Air is drawn from outside, evaporating the coolant in your system. In turn, the coolant travels and transfers refrigerant into heat, then blown into your room.
The process of a ductless AC unit blowing cool air is a bit different. The indoor unit sucks the surrounding air inside the home and through the tube, the air travels to the outdoor unit. This is to start the cooling and dehumidifying process before returning the cool air back to the indoor unit and to your room.
Will It Work For My Home?
There are different styles of ductless systems that can best fit your home. For example, there are single-zone and multi-zone ductless systems.
Single-Zone System
- Best fits in small homes
- Consists of one indoor and outdoor unit
- Only controls the temperature of the single room
Multi-Zone System
- Best fits for larger homes
- It has one outdoor unit that can power up to five indoor units
- Allows you to control the temperature separately from other rooms
Can Ductless AC Work Alongside Central AC?
You may be thinking of switching to a ductless HVAC system, but have no idea if it’ll work with your existing central AC unit. The answer is yes – it can! A Ductless system can work alongside your central AC and heat pump system. It can be a great addition if you’re thinking of another comfort system, or if you’re renovating and need new options to tackle some heating or cooling issues.
Rood Add-Ons
For example, you may have recently added on to your home, and don’t want to go through the ductwork installation. A ductless system can be your best answer as it’s easy to install and requires less work.
Rooms Not Cooling or Heating
There can be some rooms that are more difficult to keep cool or warm – despite the central AC doing just fine in other rooms. You may not want to go through the process of creating new messes to install vents and ductwork. A ductless system, however, would integrate seamlessly into your home to keep you warm or cool.
